My day job is the acting manager for my family’s landscaping company. On the side, I do a lot of freelance writing and gear testing for various outdoor publications and online sources. I also run my own website where I yammer on and on about living an active lifestyle here in Colorado.
When did you start CrossFitting?
I hit my year mark back in September, so it’s been about 14 months….yowza!
Same time frame. Who knew I’d get so lucky with a Groupon?!
I tend to be the anti-CrossFitter in that I love any WOD that has lots of running. I also enjoy the longer workouts that trend towards the 30-45 minute mark for completion. Grinders are so my thing!
Least favorite WOD:
Ha, is Fran too cliche?! I struggle overhead so anything with snatches, overhead squats or thrusters kind of makes me want to throw up on myself.
Tell us about your sports and fitness background:
I spent the first 20 years of my life as a dancer! I am studio trained and did the ballet thing for years until I decided to dance for my high school. I continued into college where I competed on one of CU-Boulder’s dance teams, and even spent a year after college as a pro for the Colorado Rapids’ now-defunct dance squad. After one season, I decided to move on and found my love for the outdoors. Since then, I’ve discovered every mountain sport possible: hiking, backpacking, climbing, mountaineering, skiing, snowshoeing, trail running, etc. If it involves endurance, adrenaline and a tendency towards the extreme, it’s probably my new favorite thing!
I spent a week on a press trip in the Grand Canyon and one of the other gals on the trip was a competitive CrossFitter– she even qualified for regionals this year! She started to tell me more about the sport, and I gradually became interested. When I saw the Groupon, I knew it was time to give it a shot.
Take us back to your first WOD…..
I remember my first WOD so clearly! It was 5 rounds of: 500 m row, 15 knees-to-elbows, and 15 supermen….and I got annihilated! Everything hurt and I couldn’t figure out how some of the others were able to go so fast and still survive!
What sort of changes have you seen in your body?
I had always been a cardio queen but anything with weights was entirely foreign to me. Since I’ve started using them on the regular, I’ve noticed a huge increase in my abilities while hiking and running. I can carry heavier packs up peaks without my legs tiring and my running pace has increased. I’ve also noticed that I’m starting to develop some back muscles— yeaaaahhhhhhh!
What sort of changes have you seen in your life?
There isn’t a lot that scares me in terms of the stereotypical stuff. However, heavy overhead weights make me nervous and continually conquering that fear, bit by bit, has made me pretty darn proud of myself!
Favorite BHCF moments:
To this day, my favorite moment is still getting my first strict pull-up! I haven’t been able to do those since elementary school and I was beyond ecstatic to finally do one again!
Advice for people getting started?
Don’t forget that CrossFit is infinitely scalable! There are so many terrifying images of CrossFit out there that can make the entire sport seem so intimidating, but there are always ways to modify the workout to accommodate whatever you can do.
Hobbies, interests outside of CrossFit?
I love to be outside. Truly, there is nothing better then heading to the mountains with my boyfriend and my pup for a week-long backpacking trip where we see no one but each other for days on end. That kind of solitude and peace is really what centers me. I also love to travel! I spent quite a few years backpacking abroad while in my 20s and the travel bug never went away. I try to visit one new country every year if possible– last year was Haiti and it’s looking like Bali is on deck for 2014!
