I am doing the Open because I want to be the fittest man on the planet. Ha! All joking aside, I am doing the Open because it gives me the OPPORTUNITY to be the fittest man on the planet. It drives me to want to improve…to train more…to train harder. I am doing the Open because my gym members are doing it, because my friends are doing it…because a good portion of the “CrossFit World” is doing it. It’s an exciting time of year for us; it is “Opening Day” for our sport: the sport of fitness.
This is the time when we get the chance to watch some amazing people do some amazing things. And I’m not talking about the 1%– we know what they can do (which is nothing short of amazing in its own right). I am talking about the 99%…the person whose first day of CrossFit is 16.1. That person may be terrified. But you know what? That person broke out of their comfort zone and did something that scared them. And now, their character is much stronger than it was before. Their self-confidence is much stronger than it was before. That person, as a whole, is much stronger than before.
Yes, the Open is the beginning of the search for the fittest man and woman on the planet. But, as most of you understand, it transcends that meaning. It allows us, as a worldwide community, to compete against one another, shed tears together, perhaps share a little blood together…but, maybe most important, it allows us to have FUN together in a positive and support environment.
